The emphasis of this book is the personal stories of Vietnam veterans who I had the privilege of interviewing. Their stories were not only interesting but, in many cases, “bone-chilling.” They endured not only the enemy in North Vietnam but the Viet Cong who were allied with communist North Vietnam who lived in the villages and towns of South Vietnam As they wore no uniform they were indistinguishable from the dress of the South Vietnam native who wanted a democratic country.Besides our soldiers, we talked to nurses who served in Vietnam. Few know the impossible conditions they went through in saving the lives of thousands of our veterans. They are also veterans who, "Answered the Call," and we must answer their physical and mental needs. Our veterans endured a jungle climate and terrain that was far different than that of the United States. They also had to endure insults from the protesters on college campuses and other groups who chose to make them the enemy instead of the enemy we were fighting. Besides human enemies they then, and still today battle illnesses caused by the chemicals and herbicides that they were exposed to, like Agent Orange and Napalm. They deserve our honor. They deserve our support. They deserve the best, most efficient and timely medical care that our country can give them. Many of our Vietnam veterans, upon their return to civilian life, suffered from mental illness, particularly PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and need the best psychological care possible. Because of their sacrifices they deserve special treatment. They should not have to pay taxes. They’ve already paid their country in full. They were answering the call of the American government.
