  • Silicon - One of the top ten elements in the body. A very important and often overlooked element for the construction and healing of connective tissue. Silicon’s effectiveness in increasing collagen production appears to be because it is a constituent of the enzyme prolyl hydrolase, which helps the body produce both collagen and glycosaminoglycans, important for connective tissue and joint health. Silicon and boron combined together have a synergistic effect, which is why you will find both of these essential elements included in Ligacol.
  • -Grape Seed Extract - Grape seed extract contains proanthocyanidins. These compounds have potent anti-oxidant properties and have a high affinity for collagen fibers in the body. They appear to work both by increasing the production of new collagen as well as inhibiting its breakdown. They strengthen the collagen by its presence and protect it from free-radical, and inflammatory, damage. GSE inhibits the activity of the catabolic enzymes hyaluronidase, elastase, and collagenase, and thereby decreases the breakdown of connective tissue in general and collagen in particular.
  • -Vitamin C - Essential for the production of collagen, the primary protein comprising connective tissues, and involved in collagen synthesis at every level. The formation of procollagen has been shown in one study to be increased eight-fold with prolonged exposure to vitamin C. For this reason, vitamin C stores must be continuously replenished in order to sustain collagen synthesis.
  • -Zinc -An important mineral in the body. It is involved in over 200 different enzyme systems. Its involvement in collagen synthesis appears to be through two different enzymes, procollagen N-proteinase, and procollagen C-proteinase. These two enzymes are required for processing the soluble precursor (procollagen) to collagen. It is because of zinc's crucial importance in collagen synthesis and repair that it is included in the Ligacol special supplement.
  • -Potassium - In an animal study, the test animals given a potassium supplement, had healing of their wounds four days earlier than the controls. Granulation and epithelialization of the wounds took place sooner and more actively, and the wounds were filled with many more fibroblasts of all ages, as compared to controls.
  • -Molybdenum - The sulfer-containing amino acids, methionine, and cysteine are integral to the production of both collagen and keratin. Molybdenum is used in the body as part of a complex called molybdenum cofactor. Molybdenum cofactor is required for the enzyme sulfite oxidase, which is used in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids.
  • -Calcium - Shown to increase collagen type X synthesis. Magnesium - Fourth most common positively charged mineral in the body, and the second most abundant positively charged mineral inside the cell. The average body contains about 25 grams of magnesium. A magnesium deficiency hinders the mechanism by which fibroblasts degrade defective collagen. Magnesium accelerates wound healing in laboratory studies, suggesting that it increases tissue strength by stimulating collagen formation.
  • -Manganese - Essential in the production of collagen via its effect on glycosylation of hydroxylysine. Some of the newly formed hydroxylysine amino acids are glycosylated by the addition of sugars, such as galactose and glucose. The enzymes that catalyze the glycosylation step, galactosyl and glucosyl transferases, require the trace metal manganese (Mn+2). The glycosylation step imparts unique chemical and structural characteristics to the newly formed collagen molecule and may influence fibril size. It is of interest to note that the glycosylation enzymes are found with the highest activities in the very young and decrease as we age.
  • Copper - Essential for collagen synthesis, and It appears to have its action via a tri-peptide called glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine (GHK), which has an affinity for copper in the Cu2+ form. The GHK-copper complex has a stimulating effect on collagen synthesis by fibroblasts.
  • Boron - Stimulates collagen synthesis and its excretion into the extracellular matrix of cartilage.
