Introduced in the early 1960s, the American M109 is a 155 mm turreted self-propelled howitzer that has undergone numerous upgrades, culminating in the M109A7. It's the most common Western indirect-fire support weapon in maneuver brigades of armored and mechanized infantry divisions. The M109 crew consists of four members: a section chief/commander, driver, gunner, and ammunition handler/loader. The chief or gunner controls the cannon's left-right (deflection) and up-down (quadrant) movements. The British Army has replaced its M109s with the AS-90, while several European armed forces are upgrading to the German PzH 2000. The U.S. and Switzerland have introduced upgrades to the M109. Following the cancellation of the U.S. Crusader, Non-Line-of-Sight Cannon, and M1299, the M109A6 ('Paladin') will likely remain the principal self-propelled howitzer for the U.S. until a replacement is introduced.
